Sometimes all it takes is that initial look, and you know something big just happened. Maria “Kat” Broines and Tyler Moschler met at a concert, and they say, right away there was a spark and a connection between the two of them. That single moment was the start of seven happy years together. The day after their seventh anniversary, Tyler sent Kat on a photo scavenger hunt around New York City. At first, Kat thought Tyler was just being sweet, seeing as their anniversary was the day before, but at the sixth stop Kat’s sister was waiting for her, and she started to catch on to what was really happening. Her suspicions confirmed at spot number seven, where she was prompted to turn around and found Tyler waiting for her.

The couple met in New York City. Many of their friends were from the city, and so it was important to the couple to show case the beauty of Virginia. That being said, it’s no surprise that Kat wanted a mountain back drop for her wedding. The couple chose their venue for the natural beauty. They say that they knew this was where they’d get married the first time they stepped on the grounds. The event was classic and vintage, with tea kettle, antique books, flowers, and succulents, as center pieces. Everything, including the Riverview Manor, fit together timelessly and effortlessly

The wedding, though the perfect show case of Virginia beauty, wouldn’t be complete if the couple weren’t true to their New York start. Seeing as they met, dated, and loved in New York, it would have been wrong to exclude it from the wedding. The seating chart was arranged as an enlarged NYC subway map. The tables were labeled as “stops” on the map, each being somewhere important to their relationship the last seven years. Furthering their blending with NYC, each guest received a personalized Cracker Jack Box, with the couple’s names, wedding date, and the New York Mets logo.

The day was the perfect blend of vintage, Virginia, and New York City. It was the ideal way to showcase their love for one another and the places that built them.

Wedding Wednesday: The Millehan Wedding

The Millehan Wedding

Sara Clark moved to Roanoke in middle school; It was there, at school, that she met the man who would eventually become her husband. Chris Millehan and Sara formed a friendship during their middle school years and dated on and off until high school, where they decided all they ever wanted was to be with one another. The two went off to Virginia Tech together to further their education, and it was in Blacksburg, at the Duck Pond, that Chris waited for Sara and her friends, with ring, roses, and champagne in hand. The two say that they can’t even remember what was said during the proposal, but all that mattered was the resounding “Yes!”

Sara and Chris pride themselves on their “fairy tale” love story, and thus it is no surprise that their wedding was an event full of love and tradition. The ceremony was held in a local church, which the two often frequented together. It was short, traditional, and perfectly showcased the couples mutual love for one another and for God. It was during their reception that the couple felt they should give back to their friends and family that have supported them through the years. So, the reception was “100% guest driven.” Sara and Chris just wanted their guests to have fun and enjoy the celebration.

However, they made sure to stay true to themselves during the whole event. They served Sushi, their favorite meal, at their reception. Their caterer was even able to incorporate a family recipe into the menu. The couple’s first date was at a Sushi restaurant that they were able to revisit on their wedding day. The owner has witnessed the two grow as individuals and as a couple, from their first date to their wedding day. There is a framed photograph of the couple hanging in the restaurant to this day.

One of the things that the couple was most thankful for was the quiet time they took for themselves between the ceremony and the pictures. The two of them escaped to a deserted Sunday School room and just basked in the excitement of being together and married at last. While they were on their small retreat, the rain, that was threatening to fall all day, finally fell, and the two said that that was the moment it really sank in that good things really do come to those who wait. By the time it was time for them to rejoin the party, the rain had stopped.

The Marshall Wedding

Jessica Boatwright and Alexander “Alec” Marshall met by chance. She, taking summer classes in Blacksburg, needed to sublease an apartment. Her friend had an open space, in a three room apartment. So that summer it was Jessica, her friend/biology partner, and, inevitably, Alec. Living together that summer the two spent quite a bit of time together and their friendship grew, but it wasn’t until she had moved out, the summer had passed, and a friend pointed out how good the two looked together did Jessica note that her feelings for Alec had definitely surpassed the “just friends” stage. And yet, it wasn’t until more than a year later that the two became “official.”

In September 2014, She and Alec had made plans to celebrate Jessica’s Birthday with friends back in Blacksburg, enjoying a Virginia Tech game. The Hokies won, and a day later, the two left Blacksburg in favor of a secluded cabin to celebrate Jessica’s birthday with her family. On a walk, just the two of them, Alec started to hum a Meatloaf song to himself. Jessica couldn’t place the song, but if she could, she would have known what was coming. The chorus goes, “Will you make me so happy for the rest of my life? Will you take me away and will you make me your wife?” The two came up on a scenic overlook, and that is where Alec got down on one knee and asked Jessica to be his. The two were shaking with excitement by the time Alec was sliding the ring on her finger.

The wedding was full of soft, comforting colors: light gray, neutral creme, gold, and dusty rose. The colors were incorporated in the DIY center pieces and the bouquets of the bridal party. Each bridesmaid got a bouquet of one type of flower, either Larkspur, pink snaps, roses, alstroemeria, carnations, or tulips. Jessica’s bouquet being a combination of the six flowers.

Jessica and Alec always thought of their friends as a big part of who they are, and their wedding day was no exception. One of their friends made the wedding cake, a four-tier multi flavored creation. Jessica’s old roommate gone pastry chef made their chocolate box wedding favors. Yet another “foody” friend catered the wedding. One friend owns a stationary company and helped design invitations. Another who is tech savvy designed the Save the Dates. Even their school teacher friend helped to make their wedding kid friendly and fun for all ages.  It was definitely a coming together of the greatest kind.

On the day of their wedding there was a light rain that Jessica’s recalls hearing pattering on the roof, while a muted glow from the fire cast a romantic air. Alec’s face full of joy and promise stared at her as she vowed to love him for the rest of her days. Some brides dread the rain, but, with the help of the soft drizzle, Jessica remembers her wedding as romantic, warm, and inviting.

The Morris Wedding

Joanna Frye and Andrew Morris sure enjoyed taking their time. The couple dated off and on in high school, but it wasn’t until they both got to college that their relationship got serious. On that same theme, Andrew’s proposal was drawn out over the course of eleven months. For Valentine’s day, Andrew gifted Joanna with a box of envelopes. The final envelope in the box contained tickets to see the Biltmore House at Christmas. While taking pictures at the overlook of the house, Andrew said “I just really want to marry you!” This was no surprise to Joanna, as Andrew had been saying this for months. This time, though, Andrew got down on one knee.

Joanna and Andrew’s wedding did not have a “theme,” but instead, the couple aimed to invoke a certain feeling in their guests. Their goal was to make them feel welcomed and invited. To do this, the couple utilized soft blushes and ivories, with the occasional pop of navy blue. As the night continued, the pink shades began to darker, and the color scheme was brought full circle with an ombre flower cascade on the staircase at their reception.

The food they served at their wedding was very important to both Joanna and Andrew. The couple worked with their caterer to create food stations that reflected these favorite places, flavors, and foods that the couple was able to experience together during the course of their long distance relationship. And then, of course, there was the wedding cake. With Joanna being a pastry chef, many people expected that she would be making her own cake. However, she wanted to be able to enjoy her day as the bride that she was. She worked closely with the caterer designing the cake, and she was able to really bring her vision alive, without having to stress about assembling the cake herself.

The wedding was made possible by close relationships with not just the guests, but many of the vendors as well. Working closely with these vendors, that they already had close relationships with made the planning process all the more special. That planning paid off, and the couple  were able to celebrate their marriage in a day full of flowers, good food, and great company.

The Coffey Wedding

Laura Pruner’s and Eric Coffey’s first date was a long time in the making. They first met online, exchanging emails and phone calls, before finally meeting for their first date. Eric proposed on a weekend trip to Charleston, South Carolina, during an evening walk on the first night of their trip.

Their mutual faith was a large part of what made their wedding special. Laura says her favorite part of the ceremony was sharing communion with Eric, moments before they finally became man and wife. This is was when the tears finally started to fall, and was a very special moment for the two of them. The couple wants their mutual Christian faith at the center of their marriage, so it was only right for it to be the center of their ceremony as well.

A fun-filled reception followed the ceremony, where the bride and groom shared their first dance to the tune of “Love Of My Life,” and the guests got to enjoy a four tiered butter cake with butter cream frosting. It was a simple, elegant, cream colored cake, standing proud on a silver cake stand, which accented Laura’s gown’s silver beading and her silver sparkly shoes.

With a last name like Coffey, it would have been a shame to miss out on a pun inspired wedding favor. Each guest received a burlap bag of coffee with a label that read, “Enjoy this coffee from the Coffey’s.” The day was centered on elegance, shared faith, and a good pun, making for memories that will last a lifetime.

The Fluker Wedding

Sarah White and Thomas “Ray” Fluker met in their early years, as students at Roanoke College. They had a class together, but didn’t spend much time with one another during their time at school. Thanks to social media they were able to stay connected after gradution, and after ten years, two career changes, and a couple of gentle denials on Sarah’s end, the two found themselves both in the same place at the same time. Back in Salem, the two of them got together for dinner at a Roanoke College staple, followed by a walk through campus, which landed the couple at a set of rocking chairs, where they sat and talked for hours. Ray and Sarah would revisit these rocking chairs when he asked her to spend the rest of her life with him, to the tune of “Question” by the Old 97.

The two wanted their wedding day to be romantic, classic, and fun. The event began with a beautiful ceremony at the Taubman, with rose petals lining the aisles. The ceremony paid tribute not only to their love, but also to Sarah’s parents. Sarah wore a piece of her mother’s wedding dress, sewn into her own, and she wore the pearls that her father had gifted her mother on their first wedding anniversary.

The reception was held on the roof of the Center in The Square, where they enjoyed each other, their friends, and their family, with a delightful variety of southern comfort food, such as chicken and waffles, mac and cheese, and lemonade. Sarah’s and Ray’s favorite part of the night was standing on that roof top surrounded by their friends and family.

Their wedding was a romantic celebration of love and friendship. The perfect evening, starting with a classic ceremony, and ending with a fun roof-top party with the perfect view to start the rest of their lives together. A view they can look back on for years to come. As a surprise for Sarah, Ray set up for a drone to capture video and photographs of the reception. This was a guest favorite, and sure to be a fun way to revisit their wedding in the years to come.

The Mayes Wedding

Christian Mayes and Sarah Landrum met through mutual friends who were trying to set up Christian. It took a while for the two of them to warm up to one another, but finally, on a rainy Sunday, Christian invited Sarah to lunch by saying, “I gotta eat, you gotta eat, so we might as well do it together.” From that moment on, Sarah says she knew that he was different. On their 9-month anniversary, Christian proposed on an after-dinner walk by the river. He said, reminiscent of their beginnings as a couple, “I’ve got to get married, and you’ve got to get married, so you might as well marry me.”

Sarah wasn’t sure about her husband-to-be’s idea of a brunch wedding. As it turned out, a brunch wedding was just to this couple’s taste. This way they could wake up in the morning and immediately begin the preparations and enjoy the festivities. There was no waiting around, as the ceremony started at 11:00 A.M, and, with a November wedding, they were able to enjoy the warmest part of the day with their guests.

Besides the early ceremony and reception, the day was highlighted with a traditional, classic reception. But, like with the brunch-aspect, Sarah and William wanted to add themselves into the event. One thing that they both find important is the legacy of love and support that they both come from. They celebrated their families by having a “family themed” wedding. There was a wedding dance for all married couples; each couple was slowly dismissed based on how long they’d been married. Sarah’s and William’s grandparents were the last two couples dancing.

Their wedding was a beautiful autumnal affair, with soft golds, browns, and creams, with the occasional pop of maroon and green. This celebration of their love and appreciation for their family was the perfect way to honor their own love and new beginning as husband and wife.

The Dye Wedding

Sarah and William met through an online dating service. On a beach trip, William proposed by exclaiming “Look what I found!” When she finally cleared the saltwater from her eyes, Sarah saw a gorgeous pearl ring.

Their wedding took place on Halloween, and Sarah took inspiration from the Harry Potter series when planning. She gave creative license to the vendors, trusting them to do what they do best, and they did not disappoint. The lighting consisted of floating candles, and the ceremony space was lined with lanterns and floral with moss accents.

Cake was lined in edible black lace, and it looked almost too good to eat. In the end, it tasted so good people ate every single piece. Their signature cocktails of the night were polyjuice potion and butterbeer, served in copper mugs.

Their wedding was elegant, with just enough touches of nerdom to match their styles. By letting the vendors have creative control, they were rewarded with a wedding they could truly call their own.

The Ivey Wedding

It took awhile for love to blossom between Lauren and Trey. They met when her father hosted a concert at their church, and Trey was the piano player. They became close friends, but it took six years before they started dating.

Trey’s proposal was a video of everyone important in Lauren’s life telling her to “Say Yes!” After the video, two of Lauren’s best friends came in and surprised her. Trey had flown them in to help them celebrate.

Lauren’s favorite moment was when she walked down the aisle. Everywhere she looked, she saw the faces of people she loved the most, and it was amazing to be surrounded by everyone she cared about.

Lauren’s father officiated the wedding, and award-winning singers TaRanda Greene, Wayne Haun, & Jim Brady sung during the ceremony. They were then treated to a fantastic dinner by the Hotel Roanoke staff. A friend of the family designed the gorgeous centerpieces on the table and the décor for the wedding. Most of the reception happened outside in the courtyard, and Lauren and Trey were just happy the rain held off.

They had a large bridal party, consisting of ten bridesmaids, ten groomsmen, three flower girls, and a ring bearer. But being able to include so many close friends and family made the day perfect.

Wedding Wednesday: The Smith Wedding

The Smith Wedding

Leah and Travis met at church. Travis was a guitar player and singer in the band. During the Christmas Eve service, Travis claimed he had to work, but then he showed up on stage. The pastor pulled Leah up as well and that was when Travis got down on one knee.

Leah’s favorite memory from the big day was just before she walked down the aisle. She stood with her father, holding his hand and just taking everything in. All the butterflies and all her excitement in taking that first step were incredibly meaningful and sweet.

Pink worked not only for the girls, but also for the men and their gray suits. Leah found ways to incorporate the color into her wedding dress, the flowers, the bridesmaids’ gowns, and the groomsmen’s vests. For some extra flair, their cake was embellished with rhinestones. And because there are never enough sparkles, they finished off the day with a sparkler exit and a fancy Corvette getaway car.

What really made the wedding unforgettable though were the bridal party and guests. Being able to celebrate their love with so many people they cared about made their big day that much more amazing.
